A Message from Your Principal, Mr. Frew

On Tuesday September 30th, Canadians across the country pause to recognize Truth and Reconciliation Day. This is an important time to reflect on the history and lasting impacts of residential schools, to honour the Survivors, and to remember the children who never returned home.

At Ross Elementary and the Abbotsford school district we know that reconciliation is not just about a single day, but about the daily work we do together to build understanding, empathy, and respect.

As a district, Abbotsford has made reconciliation a key priority. Through partnerships with local Indigenous communities, ongoing staff learning, and curriculum resources, we are committed to creating schools where Indigenous students feel seen, supported, and celebrated, and where every student learns about the shared responsibility we all have in reconciliation.

On Monday September 29th, while students are home for the Professional Development Day, our staff will be engaged in learning that directly supports this work. Together, we’ll be reflecting on how to further indigenize curriculum, participate in activities that strengthen our connection to land and story, and continue building the knowledge and practices that move reconciliation forward in our classrooms and our school.

For our students, I want you to know that these conversations are age-appropriate and rooted in values we all want for our children: kindness, empathy, respect, and hope for a better future. Together, as a community, we are helping our children understand the past while equipping them to create a more just and compassionate Canada.

Thank you for walking alongside us in this important work. Have a great weekend with your families and we’ll see you on Wednesday.
